Vulvar Whitening

A procedure that brightens vulvar skin darkened by pigmentation

Vulvar whitening is a procedure that brightens vulvar skin darkened by pigmentation.

It is carried out area by area: the labia minora, labia majora, groin, anal area and buttocks, as well as mole (blemish) removal. Firing the laser more often or more strongly does not by itself make the skin brighter, so we tailor the procedure to each area and to the degree of pigmentation. We choose between MonaLisa Touch, Venus Cell, the Accento N laser and the Lucas laser according to the condition of your skin. It takes about 30 minutes under sedation or local anesthesia, you go home the same day and recovery takes 3 days.

AFTERCARE

After whitening

  1. On the day

You may shower, but do not rub the area.

    • You may shower on the day of the procedure, but do not point the shower head directly at the area or rub it. Shower with lukewarm water, then dry the area with cool air.
    • If you have pain on the day, use an ice pack.
    • You may feel a stinging pain when you pass urine (please do not be alarmed). Do not wipe; gently pat the area dry.
  2. 2–5 days

Redness may last for a while.

    • After the procedure you may have swelling, pain, redness, slight bleeding and scabs, and the redness may last for about 2–5 days.
    • Rarely, side effects such as pigmentation, infection, inflammation or uneven skin texture may occur.
    • Using a regenerating cream and protecting the area from UV light are important. Do not force scabs off. Depending on your skin, scabs may not form at all.
  3. After 1 week

Sex, saunas, jjimjilbang (Korean bathhouses) and exercise that makes you sweat heavily are fine from 1 week after the procedure.

  4. Every 3–4 weeks

Sessions are spaced 3–4 weeks apart.

  5. What to expect

These changes are normal after whitening.

    • About two days after the procedure, once the swelling has gone down, the area turns very dark. This is melanin from deep in the skin rising to the surface to be shed, so there is no need to worry.
    • Dark, flaky patches will fall off naturally, so please do not pick them off.
    • You may feel itchy for a while as the scabs come off.
    • After a toning laser, hair may temporarily look lighter.
  6. Daily life

Please follow these guidelines in daily life.

    • To help your skin regenerate quickly, apply a thin layer of regenerating cream, if you have one, morning and evening for about 4 weeks. Regenerating cream is also available to buy at the clinic; please ask at reception.
    • Avoid smoking and drinking for 3 days.
    • Your skin is sensitive after the procedure, so avoid harsh cosmetics, exfoliants, scrubs, hot compresses, alcohol and smoking.
    • Avoid products containing vitamin C (ampoules, creams, etc.) for at least 2 weeks.
    • Avoid tanning the bikini area.
    • Recovery time may vary depending on your skin condition and the intensity of the procedure.
  7. When to call us

If you develop unusual pain, oozing or severe swelling in the treated area, be sure to come in to the clinic.

    • If an unusual reaction persists, contact the clinic at once.
    • Call the clinic if you have a strong feeling of heat, chills, itching, pain, swelling or hives.

AFTERCARE

After one-time labia minora whitening

  1. Immediately after

The area may be swollen and sore, with a burning pain.

The area will ooze a little, so please wear a small pad.

  2. From the next day

Start showering and taking sitz baths from the next day.

    • You may shower from the next day, but do not point the shower head directly at the area; let the water flow down gently from above. Never rub the treated area.
    • Shower with lukewarm water, then dry the area with cool air.
    • Because the area is moist and prone to inflammation, take a 10-minute sitz bath morning and evening with the Clinosan cleansing solution (clinical grade) you bought – for 1 week as standard, or 2 weeks if needed. After each sitz bath, dry the area thoroughly with cool air.
    • After each sitz bath, apply the prescribed Vaseline gauze to the treated area, and keep using it until your next visit.
  3. 2–3 days

Use an ice pack to ease swelling and pain.

    • For about 2–3 days, use an ice pack regularly to ease swelling and pain. To avoid frostbite, apply it at 10–20-minute intervals.
    • You may feel a stinging pain when you pass urine (please do not be alarmed). Do not wipe; gently pat the area dry.
  4. After 10 days

Start the regenerating cream after your progress check.

To help your skin regenerate quickly, apply a thin layer of the pink regenerating cream you bought at the clinic morning and evening, starting after your progress check (10 days after the procedure).

  5. After 1 month

Smoking, drinking, sex, saunas, jjimjilbang (Korean bathhouses) and exercise that makes you sweat heavily are fine after 1 month.

  6. What to expect

These changes are normal after whitening.

    • From about 2–3 days after the procedure and for up to 2 weeks, once the swelling has gone down, the area turns very dark. This is melanin from deep in the skin rising to the surface to be shed, so there is no need to worry.
    • Dark, flaky patches will fall off naturally, so please do not pick them off.
    • You may feel itchy for a while as the scabs come off.
  7. Daily life

Please follow these guidelines in daily life.

Avoid tight trousers and stiff leggings, and wear loose, breathable bottoms.

If you have any other questions, call the clinic or add the UROGYN Woman Clinic KakaoTalk channel and we will reply in a one-to-one chat.

AFTERCARE

After mole and skin tag removal

  1. 1–2 weeks

    Apply DuoDERM healing tape.

    • After mole or skin tag removal, apply DuoDERM healing tape for about 1–2 weeks (keep it on while it turns white), then apply a regenerating cream so that the skin heals cleanly.
    • Leaving the same tape on for a long time can cause an allergic reaction, so replace old tape with a fresh piece.
  2. After 1 month

If a mole comes back, it can be treated again.

If a mole comes back, it is best to have it treated again after about a month, once the skin has healed.

    • Try not to irritate the treated area, and avoid touching it often.

It is a procedure that brightens vulvar skin darkened by pigmentation.
Which areas can be whitened?
We offer labia minora whitening, labia majora whitening, groin whitening, anal area whitening, mole (blemish) removal and buttock whitening.
Will more intense, repeated sessions make the skin brighter?
Firing the laser more often or more strongly does not by itself make the skin brighter, so we tailor the procedure to each area and to the degree of pigmentation.
Can it be done without surgery?
Yes. It is non-surgical, with no worry about bleeding, and the procedure time is short, so you can get back to daily life straight away.
Is it done in one session, or do I need several?
One-time Whitening is best suited to labia minora whitening and brightens the skin in one strong session. Five-time Whitening is best suited to whitening several areas and brightens the skin gradually and precisely.
Which devices do you use?
MonaLisa Touch removes dark pigment by lifting away one layer of the epidermis (using a tip made only for whitening), and Venus Cell removes dark pigment with a fractional method. How long does it take, and how long is recovery?
It takes about 30 minutes under sedation or local anesthesia. There is no hospital stay; you go home the same day, and recovery takes 3 days.
How many sessions of labia majora whitening do I need?
Treatment starts with a standard course of 5 sessions, and depending on your skin condition there are also 7- and 9-session programs. Sessions are 1–2 weeks apart.
Does labia minora whitening also need several sessions?
Labia minora whitening is approached very differently from labia majora whitening. It can be done surgically or with a laser. Treatment takes a single session, with 1–2 follow-up visits for aftercare.
How is labia majora whitening done?
It combines treatment to brighten the skin tone – using 755 nm shallow toning, deep toning with a Q-switched ND:YAG laser, fractional laser, ampoule treatment and skin care – with treatment to remove skin tags, brown moles and spots.
When can I shower after the procedure?
You may shower on the day of the procedure, but do not point the shower head directly at the area or rub it. Shower with lukewarm water, then dry the area with cool air. My skin has turned dark after the procedure. Is that normal?
